Professional exam prep isn't a sprint before one test. It's months of the same day repeated: classes, self-study, revision, sleep, and doing it again tomorrow. The question isn't how hard you can push for a week. It's whether your daily setup lets you keep going.
That's where your PG matters more than most aspirants expect. Noise, food, sleep and travel time either protect your study hours or quietly eat them.
This guide covers a study routine based on research, and the PG setup that makes it possible.
Know Your Exam Calendar First
|
Exam |
How often |
Plan around |
|---|---|---|
|
CA Foundation, Intermediate, Final |
Three times a year: January, May and September |
Fixed attempt windows, so fixed revision cycles |
|
CS (ICSI) |
Check the official ICSI schedule |
Session-wise exam windows |
|
UPSC Civil Services |
Once a year: Prelims, then Mains, then Interview |
A long, multi-stage cycle |
ICAI moved all three CA levels to three attempts a year, with exams in January, May and September (Careers360). More attempts give you flexibility, but they also make it easy to keep postponing. Pick your attempt and plan backwards from it.
Always confirm dates on the official ICAI, ICSI and UPSC websites before you plan.
The Two Study Techniques With the Strongest Evidence
In 2013, psychologist John Dunlosky and colleagues reviewed the evidence on ten common study techniques. Two received the highest utility rating: practice testing and distributed practice (Association for Psychological Science). Rereading and highlighting, the methods many students rely on, rated low.
What that means for your day:
|
Technique |
What it looks like for CA, CS or UPSC |
|---|---|
|
Practice testing |
Solve past papers and mock tests, then check answers without peeking first |
|
Distributed practice |
Revisit each chapter several times across weeks instead of in one long block |
|
Swap rereading for recall |
Close the book and write what you remember, then check |

Sleep |
Sleep |
Adjust this to your coaching timings. The pattern matters more than the exact hours: one test-like session, one revision block, and real sleep, every day.
Sleep Is Part of the Syllabus
Late-night cramming feels productive, but it borrows from tomorrow's focus. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend at least seven hours of sleep a night for adults aged 18 to 60 (CDC MMWR).
A PG helps here in a simple way: meals at fixed times and no late-night cooking make a fixed sleep time much easier to keep.
What Your PG Must Get Right
|

Are they set, and does someone actually enforce them? |
|
A study space outside your room |

|
Fixed meal timings |
So you don't lose study time to cooking or ordering |
|

Staying Well Over a Long Prep Cycle
- Move every day: A 20-minute walk resets attention better than another chapter.
- Call home on a fixed day: It keeps you connected without breaking study blocks.
- Track progress, not hours: Mock scores and topics revised tell you more than time spent.
- Take one half-day off every week: Long prep needs recovery built in.
